Von: Hgurski@aol.com () Datum: 18.01.99, 18:17:59 Betreff: Genealogy sources in East Europe Friends, many of you are searching in the East European area. Seems to be nearly impossible to find more about your ancestors coming from there since the original sources are either gone or unavailable - hidden in any far away archives. Often they are not readable for most people; they are written in Old German, Latin, and sometimes additionally in Russian! The archivists are used to do - it´s their job. There are many archives in Germany which keep either the books, or copies of them, or store other records of these areas. And -proved by my own experience- they are willing to give information and more help whenever it´s available. They will charge some dollars, of course. Genealogy is rather costy - expect 30-50 dollars per hour! But usually -if the sources are good- they find lots of stuff in an hour or two! But isn´t it better to pay for good results than to continue running against closed doors? Here is a list someone posted anywhere in the web. Think he would agree to see it published here in our mailing lists - I´ll do it for him ;-) Most of the sources are not available in the internet, so you will have to fish your old pencil out of the corner, and write by snail mail ;-) But I prefer to use my computer - the letter is better readable To write just use the German adress form you read here. Write down all your known data as complete as possible. And be patient - sometimes it takes half a year to get a reply! Wish you good luck!
