Dear Anne and Baden- Wuerttemberg List Friends, I appreciate Anne's offered explanation, but the area to which I was referring in my original post was *Wuerttemberg*---which was NEVER part of Prussia, just as Baden was *not.* Your reference to the *Rheinland* being Prussian is correct, however---at one time that specific area was under Prussian control. I have also used dozens of LDS microfilms of Baden localities extensively for many years, and have never seen a film from Baden which "listed the town as Prussia" (or even the region as Prussia, if that's what you actually meant.) If the LDS Library did this, they would be listing it that way *in error* (which they usually take great pains to avoid). Perhaps you have seen this on films for the *Rheinland*, which would make perfect sense. If you were told at your local LDS Family History Center branch that "Prussia . . .sent armies into Baden" and that Prussia was "in control for a few years before or after Louis XIV invaded the area," the staff is suffering from a degree of confusion. NAPOLEON (not Louis XIV, and not Prussia) briefly controlled various parts of the area (particularly west of the Rhein), but although this brought about the earlier (circa 1792) institution of *civil registration* in such places as Baden, I must re-emphasize that neither Baden nor Wuerttemberg were *ever* part of *Prussia.* My original post referred only to Wuerttemberg (and secondarily to Baden). If you are referring to the *Rheinland* being under Prussian rule, that's another story. Respectfully yours, Carla HELLER Los Angeles ============================ Anne W.
