Von: johnjay@global2000.net (John Chapman) Datum: 15.07.98, 20:04:00 Betreff: Dec 7, 1927 - Conditions in Germany My Mom's Father and his family came from Weissach, Wurttemberg, Germany in 1889. Recently, when finally getting my Mom to look through her various papers, she finally gave me a folder with numerous letters that had been sent to her family years ago. Most are now terribly faded, and fortunately, some had been translated from the old German to English by someone years ago. Unfortunatley, an number have not been. I found this one letter, written in 1927 that I would like to share with the list. I really hope you all won't mind. I think it will give us all a good idea of what the conditions were in Germany in 1927. Unfortunately, at this point, I have no idea how the individual is related to us, but maybe someday I will find out. The letter goes as follows: Pforzheim December 7, 1927 Dear Aunt and Family Finally I have the opportunity to write to you again. I would have written sooner, but I lost the address. Now I want to let you know we are not doing well. We lost our house because we didn’t earn any money. My husband has been sick many years, he can no longer work and everything is too expensive. We are now already 65 years old and you can imagine how things are going with us. Our 2 children died in the war and our daughter died. We only have our son Richard, who is also married and father of 3 children. He also has not had any business(job) for two years. Dear Aunt: I ask of you please to send us some money since we are in great need; we would be so thankful to you. Christmas is coming and we don’t even have the most necessary foods to eat. May God reward you for the good you would do for us. Now I would like to ask how you all are. We hope that the Aunt is still living and is good health, also all relatives. Germany has become poor through the war and inflation. Money in the banks has become completely worthless. Dear Konrad: If your aunt is no longer living, I beg you once more to think of us and help us in our great need; we would be thankful to you. If would make us very happy if we heard from you very soon. Otherwise, there’s nothing else new. There’s just great need everywhere. Everything is expensive and there is no way of earning a living. I will close now and hope that this letter will find all of you healthy. Kindest regard to you all, your nieces and loved ones …. Maire Bader Again, I hope you don't mind my posting it. -- John Chapman "Fact gets in the way of truth!"... Cervantes Email johnjay@global2000.net home page http://members.global2000.net/~johnjay
