Are these the same book? ======================================================================= Dear Karen & Baden-Wuerttemberg List Friends, The Cornelia Schrader-Muggenthaler "Baden Emigration Book" is NOT the same thing as the Baden Emigration List Index on LDS microfilm. The book is, however, a similarly compiled index of the same set of emigration records from Baden we have been discussing in the last few days. However, there are a few important differences. There are 38 individual rolls of microfilm which comprise the *filmed* version of the Baden Emigration List Index available at the LDS Family History Library and its branches, which in total contain many *more* than the comparatively limited 7000 names included in Ms. Schrader-Muggenthaler's book version. The microfilmed LDS version includes records dating from well before 1866 up to and inclusive of 1911, which was the cutoff date for release of these records at the Badischen Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe---the official German archive where the original Baden emigration records are stored. I do not know what specific beginning and ending dates Ms. Schrader-Muggenthaler's book uses, but the published description of the book's contents indicates that it does NOT include any records from the TWENTIETH century, which the microfilm version of the Baden Emigration List Index DOES include (through 1911). Also, by definition, the microfilmed version provides *exact photographic duplicates* of the available emigration index documents, whereas Ms. Schrader-Muggenthaler's book is an edited, printed compilation which may or may not include all items of information set forth in the original records. Ms. Schrader-Muggenthaler's book is, within its particular limitations, very helpful, and is useful to those who are unable to access the Baden Emigration List Index on microfilm at the LDS library branches. Some people will find it more convenient to work with the book, either by purchasing a copy or locating it at a local PUBLIC library, where it can often be found in the Reference section. (Some public libraries may also have a circulation copy which can be checked out of the library and researched away from the library premises.) To sum up, the Schrader-Muggenthaler book is a useful tool, and may be preferable to research under certain circumstances, but it is NOT identical to, nor as COMPLETE as, the MICROFILM version of the Baden Emigration List Index published by the LDS library. The book has some notable limitations. If anyone would like to review the detailed post I made to the Baden-Wue list some time ago concerning the *microfilm* version of the BEI available through the LDS, please see the archived message at the following address: http://members.xoom.com/BW_List/text/t72.txt For ease of reading, you may want to copy the text of the letter into your word processor, and then print it out. It may be a bit more difficult to read at the site above, but is there in its entirety. Hope this helps clarify some points raised. Good luck in your research! Warmest regards, Carla HELLER Los Angeles
