In early 1834, the fourteen-year old Johanna Hottmann from Grunbach sought to emigrate to Philadelphia. Johanna was the orphaned daughter of Heinrich Hottmann and Christina Barbara Schmid. She was at that time under the guardianship of Jakob Friederich Echtenlaub of Grunbach. The file consists of three documents: a letter from the mayor of Grunbach to the Oberamt Schorndorf outlining the circumstances of the case, and recommending that she be put under the care of Jakob Lederer of Geradstetten for the duration of the voyage; a municipal council minute containing information necessary for her emigration; and finally a statement by Echtenlaub on Johanna's behalf regarding her emigration, endorsed by the municipal council.
