1. Letter, from the mayor (Schultheiß) of Grunbach to the Oberamt Schorndorf, 31 Jan 1834, regarding the emigration of Johanna Hottmann.

Die 14 jährige Johanna Hottmann, wohnhaft in hiesiger Gemeinde Raths-Sizung [sic] nach dem alle ab__elsande Bedenklichkeiten beseitigt wären, den Erlaubniß zur Auswanderung nach Philadelphia, wo sich bereits zwei Schwesteren von ihr, unter günstigen Verhältnissen besieden [sic] erhalten und es sind hinsichtlich dieser minderjährigen Person der Bestimmung der königlichen Verordnung vom 15.Aug 1817 gehörig gemacht.
Jedem um der auf ihre Auswanderung Bezug habende? Urkunden gehorsamst vorlegen habe es zu bemerken, daß der vom königlichem Oberamt bereits bekannter Jakob Lederer, von Geradstetten, seine Ge___gtheit der Johanna Hottmann auf seiner R___k___iser nutzen naheren, und aus dem ganzen Weg zu versorgen, daher zu Protokoll ___ hat, und daß er etlich, wegen g___stenhafter Verwendung das ihm ___ übergebunden Vermögen der Hottmann gehörig verpflichtet wurde, weßhalb zu wünschen ___ daß daselbe in den Paß des Lederer aufgenommen worden musste.
Sollte daß jedoch in Rücksicht mit den bereits infolgte Beglaubigung dieses Passes Anstand finden, so ist die Auswanderung Christina Hottmann von hier, welche sich ebenfalls an Jakob Lederer einschließen wird, ge___gt die Johanna Hottmann in ihrem Reisepaß aufnehmen zu lassen, wobei ich übrigens die etwaige Ausstellung eines besonderen Rathspassen für den Beg___n ganz von höheren E___ßen des königlichen Oberamts in___ zu stellen hat.

To the Royal District Office Schorndorf

The 14 year old Johanna Hottmann, residing in this community, after all matters of concern have been resolved, seeks a permit to emigrate to Philadelphia, where two sisters of hers have already settled under favorable circumstances, and it is with respect to this minor that compliance with the Royal Order of 15 Aug 1817 is appropriate.
All who most obediently consider the certificates for her emigration should take note that Jakob Lederer of Geradstetten, already known to the Royal District Office, [has agreed to] taking Johanna Hottmann [under his protection] for the voyage, to take care of her for the entire way, and that from time to time he will provide for her from her funds which are to be bound over to him, thus she must be listed on his passport.
Should even so, with respect to the already occurred verification of this passport, [a question of] propriety be found, then [considering] the emigration of Christina Hottmann from here, in which Jakob Lederer is also involved, Johanna Hottmann could be added to her passport, whereby I by the way [undertake] the issue from time to time of a special Council Pass for the ?? of higher [authorities?] of the Royal District Office.

Auf Ansuchen der Johanna Hottmann von Grunbach welche die Absicht erklärt hat, zu Philadelphia in Nordamerika sich niederzulassen, wird von dem unterzeichneten Gemeinderaths beurkundet,
1) daß gedachte Johanna Hottmann die eheliche Tochter des weil. Heinrich Hottmann, hiesiger Weingärtner und seiner Gattin weil. Christina Barbara, geb. Schmid, und laut vorgelegten Taufscheins am 18 Janr. 1820 zu Grunbach geboren ist;
2) daß dieselbe zur evangelischer Confession sich bekennt;
3) daß sie zur Zeit nicht verehelicht ist;
4) daß sie Württembergische Staats-Bürgerin und Gemeinde-Bürgerin zu Grunbach ist;
5) daß dieselbe hinsichtlich ihres Prädikats underes Wissens an keinem der in dem Gesetze vom 15. April 1828 Art. 19 bezeichneten Mängel leidet;
6) daß, was ihr Vermögen betrifft, dieselbe nach glaubhaftem Ausweise [portion crossed out]

1) that the subject Johanna Hottmann, the legitimate daughter of the late Heinrich Hottmann, local vine dresser, and his wife, Christina Barbara, nee Schmid, and according to the baptismal certificate presented, was born on 18 Jan 1820 in Grunbach;
2) that the same considers herself to be of the Evangelical religion;
3) that she is not at this time married;
4) that she is a citizen of Württemberg and a resident of Grunbach;
5) that the same according to her report to our knowledge suffers from none of the deficiencies listed in the law of 15 April 1828, Art. 19;
6) that, with respect to her assets, the same,
