According to correspondence in the H. H. West book on Lemberger genealogy, the two oldest sons of this family, Tobias Wilhelm Lemberger and Johann Gottlieb Lemberger, Jr., were the first to emigrate from Grunbach to the US, in about 1828 and 1830 respectively. The correspondence further states that the rest of the family followed in 1832, arriving in Baltimore in August (Baltimore ships passenger lists reflect a September arrival, however).
Three documents located in the emigration files of the Schorndorf Oberamt, which as the next higher government headquarters processed emigrations from Grunbach, substantially confirm the foregoing, and add a number of details. It evolves that in addition to Johann Gottlieb Lemberger, Sr., wife Elisabetha Magdalena Hottmann and their five remaining children, there were two others in this party: Anna Maria Hottmann, described as their maid and likely a niece of Elisabetha's, and Johann Friederich Austle? of Schorndorf, described as a hired hand.
1. Memorandum, Jadkreis [not known whether this was really a county as such, but evidently, from other records, it had the special mission of processing emigrations for the Oberamt], Oberamt Schorndorf, 29 April 1832, concerning the emigration of several citizens. Much of the covering memorandum is very difficult to read, but a gist can be derived. |
